Rookie

Why this
niche?
In this niche, I found a channel that started only 2 months ago and already achieved more than 3.1M+ views. Besides, this is an incredibly large audience that’s so hooked on the series, they turn to YouTube channels like these for comfort. From people who’ve already finished watching the show to newbies who just got starte. In short: anyone who’s a fan of The Rookie. So if you’re one of them, or if you’re simply looking for a niche with a loyal fan base that you can actually build a brand around, then this niche is for you.

This is fine, but...
This video has gained over 1.1 million views, which shows that this is clearly not a bad opening, otherwise the views wouldn’t be that high. What works well about this line is that they immediately deliver the value the viewer clicked for. But can it be improved? Yes. Technically, they’re just repeating the title. There’s nothing wrong with that, but you could also start the story right away and personally, I prefer that approach because it pulls the viewer into the story from the very first second. A good example of a channel that does this is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDUQhRHZ4y0

Nice voice-over
What I like about this voice-over is that it doesn’t sound too AI-generated. It actually feels like someone is telling a real story, which makes the video feel more personal. Of course, this would get even better if the script itself improves, but what I’m trying to say is that the sound of a real voice-over can really enhance the storytelling. And if you still prefer to work with AI, make sure to use a voice that sounds as realistic as possible.

Sharing his own opinion
'This scene was one of the saddest moments in the entire show and it's crazy how the show killed off someone so early and so brutally...
Sometimes forming your own opinion and making sure you’re thinking the same way as your audience is a great way to trigger the viewer. Anyone who has watched this series will probably share that same opinion, so mentioning it in the script is a smart move. It helps create a bit of a bond with the audience and makes the story feel more personal, just like I mentioned earlier about the voice-over, where the realistic tone made it feel like someone was really telling their own story.

This is fine, but could be much more triggering
I can see that they’re trying to make a smooth transition to the next case using a hook. What I do like is that they at least try to keep it one continuous story, so you don’t really notice that you’re being led into the next case. However, I do think this could be improved. The hook itself isn’t very strong. I would suggest adding something like:
• But just when you thought it couldn’t get any crazier, they killed off this character...
• But the real shock came when this character was suddenly gone...
• But nothing could’ve prepared us for what happened next...
• But the most brutal twist? Still ahead...
• But then the show did the unthinkable....
• But then came the moment no one was ready for...
• But nothing... and I mean nothing...could top what happened next....

Sarcastic humor/storytelling
All of this would make you believe that he's a really good cop... Right.. Right....?
What makes this video work so well are exactly these small details, it feels like the person speaking actually watches the show and is telling the story from their own perspective. I mentioned this earlier as well, but adding little things like this to the script really helps build a stronger connection with the audience.

Typical top 10 strategy
What we’re seeing here fits perfectly with the intro style this competing channel uses. At the 10-second mark, they announce the first character, and only after that do they really start telling the story. And while there’s nothing necessarily wrong with that, it does feel like a missed opportunity because there are so many other ways to trigger the viewer right from the start. The good news is that if this audience is already fine with a script like this and it got over 1.1 million views, imagine what could happen by adding more hooks, skipping the basic “top 10” format, and just getting straight to the point.

This thumbnail achieved more than 1.2M views
This is a great thumbnail that pulled in over 1.2 million views so that already confirms it works. The design looks good: clear color contrast, limited focal points, and visually easy to read. But I do think the message of the thumbnail could be more triggering. How I would approach that is something I’ll explain further in the “How to Create Your Thumbnail” section.

How to find topics?
To find topics in this niche, you always need to take a close look at the most popular videos from our competing channel to spot patterns. I know this advice shows up in almost every niche, but it really is the first step in finding the right topic. To make things as easy as possible for you, I’ve listed the three most popular videos below.
- Every KILLED OFF Character In The Rookie...
- Every The Rookie Cast Member Who Left (and why...)
- The DARKEST Episodes of The Rookie...
Test yourself for a moment. Is there anything that stands out to you? Do you notice a certain pattern? If not, I’ll help you out: they mostly focus on emotional or dramatic moments in the show, like when characters are killed off, when actors leave the cast, or when episodes take a really dark or intense turn. The main goal is to make the viewer curious and emotionally invested. People who watch these videos are usually fans of the show, so they care about the characters and major turning points. What all these topics have in common is that they make the viewer think: “Did I miss this?” or “I need to see what happened.” That’s what makes them so clickable. So In short: it’s all about who left, what went wrong, and when things got intense.
Community Posts: You can also get a lot of topic inspiration by looking at the community posts from the competing channel.

ChatGPT: You can choose to work with ChatGPT if you don’t know much about the series yourself. Of course, you could also work with a scriptwriter, but in that case, you’d need to find someone who’s actually familiar with the series otherwise, it could be difficult. So if you know how to work with Chat, you can easily use that for this niche.
Topic:
To create my own topic in this niche, I started analyzing the competition even more closely. Which videos stand out and were posted recently? That’s when I immediately found the second most popular video, uploaded just two weeks ago and already over 400K views. This clearly shows that the topic strongly resonates with the audience, which is exactly why I’d choose it. I’m already getting some ideas on how we can make it even more triggering and create even more FOMO. (See title explanation)

How to create your thumbnail?
First, I used ChatGPT to find the names of characters who left the show or decided to quit themselves. I then Googled those names and selected these photos based on that. (Except for Nathan, the man in the middle who isn’t part of that list.) But since his face appears on almost every thumbnail in the competition, we’re including him too. He plays one of the most important roles in the series and is definitely someone viewers recognize instantly.

Photoshop
Next, I continued working in Photoshop and changed the background colors to make the thumbnail stand out right away. I also blurred Nathan’s face to create a sense of mystery, making viewers wonder who’s behind the blur. That mystery is the main trigger to get people to click. In short: you’re giving the viewer a real reason to click, and creating a sense of FOMO at the same time.

So if you followed all the steps, your thumbnail wil look like this:

AUDIENCE ANALYSIS
What does the audience like?
All seasons of The Rookie
This audience consists of true fans. I can see in the comments that some people have only just discovered this channel and are just starting the series, but it's also good to know that there are fans who have been waiting a long time for season 8.
Characters who get killed or leave
They get triggered when their favorite characters leave or are killed off in the series. That’s also the reason why I put this under ‘likes’. They might not like it, but it does trigger a strong emotional reaction and that’s very important to remember when choosing topics.
AUDIENCE ANALYSIS
What does the audience not like?
Mistakes
Because they’re such big fans of the series, they also know a lot about it so if you share incorrect information, they’ll definitely call you out in the comments.
